Frequently Asked Questions about Orthotics

Q: How do custom orthotics work?
A: Our custom orthotics are made from precise imprints of your feet in order to ensure optimal comfort and support. They look like insoles but are biomechanical medical devices that are made to address your specific foot imbalance.
Q: Why do people get custom orthotics?
A: These devices help with a wide range of foot conditions, including the following:
  • Flat feet
  • Fallen arches
  • Knee pain
  • Ankle pain
  • Bunions
  • Hammer toes
  • Low back pain
  • Hip pain
  • Plantar fasciitis
Since the function of your feet impacts the rest of your body, orthotics can even help with neck pain and headaches.
Q: Are custom orthotics different from insoles?
A: Yes. Insoles really just supply padding but don’t address your specific biomechanical issue. Physio Art Rehabilitation will create orthotics customized to your unique needs. Our devices must pass rigorous quality control before being implemented in your treatment.
Q: How can orthotics help me?
A: Custom orthotics are designed to provide balanced support across your feet. These devices can help redistribute your body weight and take pressure off overburdened areas. Custom orthotics will help maintain proper alignment of your feet, ankles and knees.
Q: Will they help with my lower back pain?
A: Yes. If your biomechanics have changed or your arches dropped, you might have too much pressure on your ankles, knees and hips which may result in lower back pain. Custom orthotics can help correct your biomechanical problems, thus reducing pressure and relieving pain.
Q: How are they made?
A: Physio Art Rehabilitation uses the latest in technology to analyze the biomechanics of your feet when standing and walking. The results of our comprehensive examination are sent to a lab, where technicians interpret our physical and electronic data. Your custom device is then milled and manufactured.
Q: How long does it take to make custom orthotics?
A: The standard time between placing an order and picking up the finished product is 5 to 7 business days.
Q: How long do they last?
A: At least 1 year with everyday use. If you have more than one pair, you can expect them to last between 2 to 5 years.
Q: What types of shoes are custom orthotics used in?
A: They can be used in all types of footwear. We can create a multi-purpose orthotic used in casual, work and sport applications or a specific runner’s orthotic that offers increased shock absorption and stability while using more breathable materials. Physio Art Rehabilitation is pleased to create orthotics for:
  • Court sports
  • Dress shoes
  • Narrow heels or boots
  • Golf shoes
  • Skis or snowboards
  • Skates
Q: Will they be difficult to get used to?
A: We recommend a 2-week trial period, although many of our Hamilton patients enjoy immediate comfort.
Q: Do custom orthotics come with a warranty?
A: Yes. You have a 90-day warranty period for modifications. If changes are needed, we will re-fit your orthotics.
Q: Are they covered by my insurance?
A: Yes. Most Canadian workers have partial or full coverage for custom orthotics through your workplace health care plans. OHIP does not cover them. We will provide you with an itemized receipt to assist with any insurance reimbursements. Our experienced staff is happy to help with your insurance questions.
